Product Review: Wink Frozen Dessert

Don’t buy Wink Frozen Dessert without reading this review. Vegan, fat-free, and sugar-free, this food is swayed with two eager thumbs and eight fingers.

Unfortunately, Wink Frozen Dessert is classified as a food. Last night I had a pint of dark chocolate. When I looked at the ingredient list, the only two substances identifiable as “food” were cocoa powder and ground flaxseed. Other ingredients include inulin, pea protein, guar gum, stevia extracts, monk fruit and a substance called “natural flavors.” Note that “natural flavors” is an umbrella term for minor ingredients that a food manufacturer does not have to disclose or list. Often, “natural flavors” include neotame, which is a potent toxin from the same family of artificial sweeteners as aspartame. Neotame would definitely be needed to make the Wink product palatable because not all stevia and monkfruit extracts are sweet.

As for the taste, this Wink Frozen Dessert might be the worst thing I’ve ever had in my mouth. The look and feel of sherbet is similar, but sherbet doesn’t satisfy anything. The Dark Chocolate sample I tried barely qualified for the chocolate flavor. Yes, the initial taste was mildly chocolatey, but after a second or two, it turned into something metallic tasting, unpleasant and unrecognizable. I might add that it wasn’t a taste I wanted to grow. Immediately after eating, I had a headache around my temples and a slight stomach ache.

In terms of nutritional value, a full pint is only 100 calories, zero grams/calories of fat or sugar, and no dairy. The prospect of a sugar-free dessert for only 100 calories is what appealed to me. I should know better than to expect something from nothing. Many of Wink’s marketing images include fruits, nuts, and coconut, and these add-ons are certainly necessary to make this product palatable. It sure is easier, cheaper, and tastier to make your own sugar-free drink at home. Then you can control the ingredients as well.

Finally, the cost of Wink Frozen Dessert is amazing. Each pint is $8, and Wink asks you to buy 4 pints, which is $32. Shipping is another $9.99. Even with a freebie discount of a pint for being a new buyer, the total cost came to $33.99, which I consider money flushed down the toilet.

Bottom line: When you see the sweet Wink Frozen candy ad on your Facebook or Instagram page, just swipe right by.
